IN SPORTS - BASKETBALL

North Carolina's athletic program will follow the lead of one of its most famous alumni and switch to Nike shoes and apparel with the upcoming athletic year.

The switch also means Coach Dean Smith's national championship basketball team will change from its traditional Converse white-and-Carolina blue to the Nike line.

Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan, who helped Smith get his first national collegiate championship in 1982, is a Nike spokesman.

The athletic department's decision breaks a relationship spanning the length of Smith's tenure at Chapel Hill, save for the 1970 season, when players were allowed to wear the basketball shoes of their choice.
