3 ROANOKE FIRES PROBED AS DELIBERATE

Three fires that broke out within an hour Tuesday night in the 500 block of Seventh Street Southwest are being investigated as possible arson cases.

Firefighters were called to 507 Seventh St. about 8:30 p.m. and found a couch burning in an abandoned apartment building.

They were called to 511 Seventh St. about an hour later when a resident of that apartment building reported a mattress on fire in the building's entrance hall.

Fire officials said an inspector was sent to the building when the second fire was reported because the proximity of the fires made them suspicious.

At 11:30 p.m., minutes after they had left the second apartment building, firefighters returned when a garage at that same address was reported on fire.

The buildings sustained only minor damage and no one was injured in any of the instances.
