SAFETY BOARD NAMES REGIONAL AWARD WINNERS

The District 2 Community Traffic Safety Board has announced the names of the Roanoke region winners in the 1993 Governor's Transportation Safety Awards Program. The awards, which were presented at the Annual Conference for Transportation Safety in Hampton, honored individuals and/or organizations who have made contributions to transportation safety in Virginia.

The judges in the 23rd Judicial Circuit Court received the Legal Award for contributing to the development and implementation of the Adult and Juvenile Driver Improvement Program. This program provides procedures for the evaluation and screening of adjudicated habitual offenders who petition the Circuit Court for restoration of their driving privileges.

The Salem Police Department received the Occupant Protection Award for conducting a comprehensive safety belt campaign during the 1992 Christmas holiday season.

Paul Howell, regional coordinator for the Virginia State Boating Course in Region 2, received the Water Safety Award for educating more than 1,000 people from the Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake areas about boating safety during in a course, "Boating Basics."

Three Roanoke Valley residents also have been named to the board. They are: Lee Linkous, a Roanoke County police officer; Belinda Anderson, part owner of Car Guys Inc.; and Roger Fuller, a Roanoke police officer.
