DOG NABS FUGITIVE AFTER HUNT

A Montgomery County Sheriff's Office tracking dog on Thursday captured a man who fled when the car in which he was a passenger was stopped for a traffic violation.

Lorne E. Rivens, 23, of Allen Avenue in Radford ran after Deputy G.W. Garrett recognized him as the subject of outstanding warrants, said Lt. Tommy Whitt of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Rivens was wanted on a bench warrant from Montgomery County Circuit Court and on 1990 charges of felony breaking and entering, misdemeanor destruction of property and petty larceny.

Garrett stopped the car about 3:15 p.m. on Prices Fork Road, Whitt said. Rivens fled into a heavily wooded area as the deputy attempted to arrest him.

Sheriff's deputies, the canine unit of the Bland Correctional Center and a Virginia State Police helicopter pilot conducted a five-hour search of the area, Whitt said.

Rivens was taken into custody near Prices Station Road, less than a mile from the car he had fled.

"Local residents had called us and advised us he had been by there trying to use the phone," Capt. Tom Roseberry said.

With that information, the sheriff's office's tracking dog, Kitt, was used to trail the man.

Kitt's handler, Dep. J.W. Spooner, thought he heard movement in the woods and turned Kitt loose. Roseberry said Rivens stopped under a tree when Kitt started closing in.

When deputies reached Kitt, Rivens was behind a log. The dog was holding the man's upper left arm, Roseberry said, detaining him as he has been trained. Rivens suffered a slight wound but refused treatment, Roseberry said.
