FIRST UNION TO OPEN ITS RELOCATED CARD CENTER

One of two departments being moved to Roanoke by First Union Corp. will open Monday at the company's operations center on Plantation Road.

The bank card customer relations center, moved from First Union's headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., will be staffed primarily by former employees of Dominion Bank, which First Union acquired in March.

The other department, a consumer loan service center, opened about a month ago.

The move of the two departments, announced in March, means 400 jobs in Roanoke, partly offsetting about 850 the companies eliminated as part of merging operations. First Union said it expects to add another 250 Roanoke Valley jobs by the end of this year.

Tammy Murphy, a coordinator, said only the first 20 employees will go to work Monday; others are still in training. - Staff report
