HUGH EDWARDS of Christiansburg has been named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor conferred by the Lions Club International Foundation. Named for Lions founder Melvin Jones, recipients are selected for demonstrating practical application of the club's motto, "We Serve."

Edwards joined the Christiansburg Lions Club in 1946, and has maintained 100 percent attendance, which translates into being present at more than 1,600 meetings.

Lions Club secretary for 21 years, Edwards was awarded a life membership in 1976 for his contribution and commitment to the organization.

The American Legion Harvey-Howe Carper Post No. 30 of Radford has installed new officers. ERNEST KAUFMAN will serve as commander; GEORGE OWELLS, vice commander; PETE REED, service officer; ALBERT SIMPKINS, finance officer; ALLEN MILLER, chaplain; ERNEST HOBACK, sergeant-at-arms; and CHARLES RATLIFFE, Americanism chairman.

\ Four New River Valley artists received awards in the 14th Virginia Watercolor Society Jurored Exhibition 1993. Z.L. FENG of Radford won a Savoir-Faire-Lana Paper Award, and ROBERT FIELDS of Blacksburg received a Northern Virginia Watercolor Workshop Award. JEAN NELSON of Christiansburg took the Central Fidelity Bank Northern Region Award, and MEI SHU of Radford won the Citizens Bank & Trust Company Blackstone Award.

\ The Southside Garden Club awarded MRS. ROBERT CANNELL the club's silver bowl at its July meeting for having earned the most points last year exhibiting horticulture and flower arrangements. Following the meeting, members went on a walking tour of the Plant Plant gardens, escorted by Alenne Walker, owner of the business.

\ The Rotary Club of Montgomery County has inducted its officers and directors for 1993-94: President, DAN LUDWIG; president-elect, CHIP WORLEY; vice president, DAVE TUGGLE; secretary, PAULINE PEVERLY; treasurer, BONNIE SVRCEK; sergeant-at-arms, FRAN MITCHELL; past president, KEN DAWSON; directors, LARRY BOWMAN, JUANITA ELLETT, PAT SCANLON and BOB YOUNGS.

\ Gov. Douglas Wilder has appointed ROBERT W. "BOB" THOMAS of Radford to a new Southwest Virginia Tourism Infrastructure Strategic Planning Study Commission, representing the New River Valley HOSTS, the regional tourism organization.

\ Nine women have completed Heritage Hall's CERTIFIED GERIATRIC NURSING ASSISTANT COURSE in Blacksburg. Melissa Armstrong, Dana Collins, Terry Edmonds, Tammy Jones, Michelle Lindsey, Elaine Link, Denise Patzsch, Eula Vandergriff and Susan Zirkle are certified geriatric nursing aides.

\ Playmakers & Company of the University Mall in Blacksburg said NORA HANSEN, DEE DAVIDSON and VICTOR KUEHN have been selected to act in the next play, "Painting Churches" by Tina Howe. The show will be in September.

\ CONNIE D. AKERS of Radford is a winner in the 1993 National Federation of Press Women communications contest. Her entry, graphics that appeared in the "Ideas at Work" magazine published by National Business College in Salem, is eligible for the national contest. Akers garnered four other awards at the state level for logo designs, a poster and a catalog.

\ July employee of the month at Meadowbrook Nursing Home is DAVID DAVIS, an Ironto resident who has been in the dietary department at Meadowbrook for five years.

\ Pulaski artist JACK CAYTON received the Florence Lonsford Award for traditional landscape painting at a reception at the Salmagundi Club in New York. Cayton is known for mood-evoking paintings of Southwest Virginia and Tennessee landscapes.

\ The Wilderness Road Chorus of Sweet Adelines named MARY ANN H. JOHNSON of Blacksburg the Sweet Adeline of the Year. Johnson is a charter member of the group and has served in many capacities, including president, over the past seven years.

\ Pianist ANNA MITCHELL of Blacksburg has been selected to play in a master class for the 22nd international workshops in Honolulu in July. Three hundred musicians from 24 countries are attending the workshops this year.
