MCDONALD 5TH AT RICHMOND TENNIS TOURNEY

Salem's Tommy McDonald placed fifth in the men's singles competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit Tournament at the University of Richmond.

McDonald, who competes for East Carolina, beat Kevin Long of James Madison 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation final. In the semifinals, McDonald defeated Wake Forest's Charles Einwick 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

In other sports in the region: Brett Newman hit a two-run double as North Roanoke American defeated Buckingham County 10-8 in the first round of the Dixie Ponytail State Tournament in Bedford.

Marcie Henry pitched a complete game as the Roanoke team advanced to the second round.

Seven teams from around the state are competing in the tournament for 10-12-year-olds.
