Lawyer gets Legal Aid award

HENRY L. WOODWARD, director and general counsel for the Legal Aid Society of the Roanoke Valley, has received the 1993 Legal Aid Award from the Virginia State Bar.

Since 1973 he has been working to expand the legal rights of the poor in Virginia. In 1983, he successfully persuaded the Supreme Court of Virginia to strike down Virginia's common law necessaries doctrine under the Virginia Constitution's sex discrimination law. He also served as lead counsel in a 1987 case in which the United States Supreme Court found that public housing tenants have a right of action for violations of the National Housing Act.

He is a graduate of Williams College and the Yale University Law School.

BANKING

\ JOHN R. FRANCIS JR. has been named an executive vice president at First Citizens Bank in Greensboro, N.C. He will oversee all bank operations in a 24-county region in North Central North Carolina. He most recently worked as president of the community banking group for First Union Corp.'s Dominion Bank unit in Roanoke.

\ LAYNE E. BURCHAM of Pulaski has been promoted to vice president of the Southwestern region at Central Fidelity Bank. He is currently a commercial account manager in the New River Valley.

COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

\ CHARLES O. WARREN JR. has been appointed president of Lynchburg College. He was president of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh from 1987 to 1993.

He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Tech and his doctorate from the University of Florida.

HOSPITALS

\ ELIZABETH ADERHOLDT has been appointed vice president at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. She formerly worked as a director of management engineering at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

HOTELS

\ DIAN C. PORTER has been named director of marketing at the Roanoke Airport Marriott.

INSURANCE

\ KEITH A. HALL has been named regional manager for Capitol American Insurance Group, a company specializing in cancer, hospital indemnity and accident insurance. He operates Hall Insurance Services in Roanoke.

MANUFACTURING

\ CINDY SHOCKLEY has been promoted to purchasing manager and SHERRY SEIB has been named advertising and promotion manager at Carter Machinery Co. in Salem. Shockley has been a Carter employee for four years and previously worked in product support operations, sales and payroll. Seib has been with the firm for 10 years and has worked as executive assistant to the president.

\ LARRY W. OATES has been named chairman of the North Carolina/Virginia division of the Southern Textile Association. He is vice president of manufacturing for The Carolon Co. in Rural Hall, N.C.

PUBLISHING

\ KARL W. RHODES has been named managing editor of Virginia Business magazine, a Richmond-based publication with an office in Roanoke. He will be responsible for daily operation of the magazine's news department. He has worked as a staff writer, Richmond regional editor and associate editor at the magazine.

Also, JOHN A. RUBINO and CHERYL J. CEASE have been appointed contributing editors at the magazine. Previously an analyst, writer and editor for Value Line Investment Survey, Rubino will focus on writing cover stories and a regular investment column.

Formerly a freelance writer and an editor in Virginia Business' Norfolk office, she will handle copy editing and an assortment of special projects.
