HARRISON OUTRUNS FIELD AT FRANKLIN COUNTY

When Harvey Harrison won the Late Model Stock Car race at Franklin County Speedway on June 19, everyone was shocked.

After all, it was 16 years after Harrison's first and only FCS victory, and he sneaked across the finish line first when the leaders collided on the final lap.

But win No. 3, the 100-lap LMSC feature Saturday night at the Dr Pepper 300, was just five weeks in coming. "And this time, I really won it," Harrison said.

Harrison, from Renick, W.Va., started on the outside pole, just behind Salem's Dicky Wilson. Like last week, Wilson set the pace for the first portion of the race, this time 31 laps, until his tires betrayed him. Wilson faded to sixth.

Ferrum's Bobby Radford led from laps 31 through 48, until he visited the pits during a caution. Radford ended up fourth.

When Radford pitted, Harrison took the lead and never relinquished it. Tony McGuire, winner the past two weeks, challenged Harrison in the final 25 laps but never caught him. McGuire took second.

"I thought we were handling a whole lot better than car 51 [Harrison]," said McGuire, who had as many wins in the previous 14 days as Harrison had in 16 years. "But for some reason we kept losing ground on the straightaways."

Salem's Ronnie Newman, driving a borrowed car, finished third and retained his second-place position in the points standings.

George Spangler hit the wall on lap 48 and was taken to the hospital with an apparent broken leg.

In other races Saturday night:

Mini Stock points leader Steve Lynch held off John Hall, the winner the past two weeks. Wayne Corprew finished third, and pole-sitter Tommy Dean was fourth.

Jimmy Mullins made it two-for-two weeks with a victory in the Street Stock division. Points leader Phillip VanDerVeer was second, and Lonnie Foley, second in points, finished third. Pole-sitter Freddie Goff was fourth.

Red Hartman was the Pure Stock winner. Leon Moles, last week's winner was second, and points leader R.W. Lawhorn finished third.
