USTA EVENT RETURNS

The $10,000 USTA Women's Circuit of Roanoke tennis tournament returns to Hunting Hills Country Club this week for the sixth straight year.

Qualifying begins at 8 a.m. today and continues Monday. Main-draw matches begin Tuesday and lead to Saturday's semifinals and the Aug. 1 championship match.

The tennis equivalent of baseball's minor leagues, the tournament features low-ranked professionals and top college players competing for prize money and ratings points.

A 13-year-old named Mary Pierce won the doubles tournament in 1989. Pierce now ranks 14th in the world in singles.
