BLACK THEATRE FESTIVAL DRAWS TOP PERFORMERS TO WINSTON-SALEM

Stars will shine both day and night Aug. 2 - Aug. 7, when the North Carolina Black Repertory Company hosts the third biennial National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The festival's opening night gala will include a reception honoring special guest Sidney Poitier. Celebrity performers participating in the week of stage plays and workshops will include Della Reese in a stage reading of a blues music revue; John Amos in a one-man show; Glynn Turman and Yolanda King in a funny, fast-moving love story; Antonio Fargas as Toussaint, Angel Warrior of Haiti; and Phyllis Yvonne Stickney as three black women with stories to tell. Nightly receptions following performances will include opportunities to interact with theatre professionals and enthusiasts as well as scores of Hollywood well-knowns.

During the week, 30 of America's top black theatre companies will showcase their works, with something for every taste ranging from Brer Rabbit to Black Erotica. A special Theatre Symposium for Presenters, aimed at increasing their knowledge of collaboration, audience development and artistic partnerships also will be available.

Some package rates and discounts are offered. For festival information, call (919) 723-7907. For symposium details, call (202) 833-2787.
