MEXICO WHIPS U.S. IN GOLD CUP SOCCER 4-0

Mexico battered the United States 4-0 to boost its rising soccer fortunes while winning the Gold Cup championship of the North, Central American and Caribbean Football Federation in Mexico City.

Ignacio Ambriz scored Mexico's first goal in the 11th minute with a powerful kick from 30 yards out that whizzed just past the left side of U.S. goaltender Tony Meola, a former University of Virginia player.

At 31 minutes, Luis Roberto Alves Zague fired a pass to a Mexican teammate. When Desmond Armstrong tried to intercept for the Americans, he instead deflected the shot into his own net, giving Mexico a 2-0 advantage.
