'93 GRADUATES LOADED WITH HONORS

Completing 12 years of school is a major milestone culminating in high-school graduation.

In this second Classnotes column honoring 1993 high school seniors in the New River Valley, we congratulate all the graduates and list those who received scholarships and special awards.

More than 150 awards and scholarships were received by graduating seniors at BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL.

Kevin Schug won several awards and a full football scholarship to the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.

An Annual Merit Scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh was awarded to Karen Marie Hendricks.

Other award and scholarship recipients are Tiffany Marie Albert, Saad Tariq Bakir, Ariel Lorien Branch, Ryan Brown, Shawn Andrew Brown and Alexandra Kasia Butterfield.

Also, Amy Elizabeth Cassell, Ann Stuart Cassell, Alisha Sue Chasey, Anthony Sue-Yang Chen, Erin Elizabeth Cline, Steven Linn Crist, Dyana Christine Crotts and Angela Lacey Cundiff.

Also, Christin Leigh Daniels, Michael James Davis, Missy Dodson, Jeffrey Ryan Emerson, Lori Ann Falls, Rebecca Farkas, Benjamin Peter Fields and Jeffrey Fox.

Senior awards and scholarships also went to Catherine Marie Gaines, Christine Gibson, Amy Ilene Gray, William Randolph Grayson, Benjamin Jacob Green and David Lamond Griffith.

Two-thirds of the graduates of FLOYD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL have plans to continue their educations.

Among the 132 seniors graduating, many have received significant awards and scholarships for their efforts.

Jolene Belcher was awarded a $12,000 Avon Foundation scholarship to attend Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Darian Grubb, a recipient of Joan Sowers Memorial, Lex Memorial and FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) scholarships, also is planning to attend Virginia Tech.

Other awards and scholarships were given to Robert Baron, Melodie Joan Bishop, Earl Blanchard, Christopher James Bond, James Boswell, Timothy Bower, Donna Boyd (valedictorian) and Matthew David Byler.

Also, Mary Ashley Chatneuff, Amy Dawn Conner, Danah Conner, Linnette Gale Conner, Kimberly Criner, Jeremy Dulaney, Shawn Patrick Dunaway, Amara Franko (salutatorian), Robin Suzanne Gallimore and Christie Ann Gliem.

Also, David Goorsky - appointed to United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. - Robin Dawn Harman, Alisha Nanyel Harrison, Paul Kim Horn, Michael Hylton, Erin Jones, Mary Joyce Knapp, Amanda Gayle Light and Chase Lowe.

Also, William Lewis Marshall, Heather Simonne Michaud, Melissa Dawn Montgomery, Aaron Pike Mumaw, Amy Noel, Melanie Penn, Billy Joe Quesenberry, Melissa Kaye Reed, Sarah Smith, Michele Summerlin, Stephanie Thompson, Tracy Lewis Thompson, Darcie Voldahl, Kristy Wimmer, Carmen Renee Wood and Kristie Ann Yopp.

\ GILES HIGH SCHOOL's Class of 1993 garnered more than 40 scholarships, as well as numerous awards for excellence.

Kristina Atkins received a scholarship from the Pearisburg Business and Community Association and several awards.

Steven Steele won the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6000 scholarship.

Seniors receiving other awards and scholarships were Wendy Abel, Tonya Anderson, Robert Austin, Jean Ann Bailey, Debbie Boyd, Joey Caldwell, Jamie Cardwell, Katherine Lee Coffey and Russell Conley.

Also, Shannon Dillon, Jamie Gusler, Suzanne Harrison, Daniel Hedrick, Charlie Henderson, Sean King, Christie Kirk, Susan Kirk, Stephanie Kirk, Eddie Lang, Dayna Lassinger, Ora Lea Lucas, Michelle Mahaffey, Jill Martin and Matt McGuire.

Also, Mary Ann McPeak, Brandon Meredith, Amanda Millirons, Kim Morris, Kristin Mustard (salutatorian), Holly Myers, Rusty Newby, Shannon Price, Melissa Pritchard, Benjie Ratcliffe, Wendy Reed, Melissa Rumberg and Shane Rundgren.

Also, Christie Sabat, Stephanie Sanders, Michael Shannon, Melinda Smith, Tonja Smith, Susan Stafford, Barry Stephens, Greg Stevers, Glenn Stowers, Julie Strong, Sherry Stump, Fred Thompson, Tonya Tickle, Leslie Vest, Brooke Weiss, April Whittaker, Tess Williams, Jeff Wilson and Ben Woods.

There were several awards and scholarships awarded to members of the\ NARROWS HIGH SCHOOL Class of 1993.

Jason Micklewright won a four-year Air Force ROTC scholarship to Virginia Tech in Blackbsurg, along with the Dr. J.I. Rodgin Scholarship.

Michael Martin was honored with the Raymond M. Ingram Memorial Scholarship and vocational machine-shop scholarship.

Other seniors receiving awards and scholarships were Whitney Albert, Lacrista Allen, Amy Buracker, Eirin Conley, Jennifer Garrett, Jeff Gilbert, Karen Green (salutatorian), Jennifer Gunter, Shana Hazelwood, Chandra Lowe, Chris Martin, Matt Martin, Michael Martin, Tanya Perdue, Wendy Perdue, Steve Ross, Sheri Turner and Brian Weaver (valedictorian).

More than 90 members of the RADFORD HIGH SCHOOL senior class received diplomas in graduation ceremonies.

Senior class president Douglas Jeremy Shelton, son of Capt. Herman and Beth Fitzgerald, entered the United States Military Academy at West Point following graduation.

With the Whitt Memorial Scholarship and his appointment to West Point, Shelton has been awarded in excess of $250,000 in scholarships.

Emily Brouwer's four-year scholarship to James Madison University in Harrisonburg includes tuition, fees, books and housing.

Emily She is the daughter of Charles and Glenda Brouwer.

Other scholarship and award recipients were Sara Argabrite, Liberty Boor, Eric Marshall Brittle, Emily Brown, Shannon Brown (salutatorian), Joseph Burcham, Heather Calfee, Andrew Clark and Andrew Cogswell.

Also, Scott Effler, Kevin Roberto Fellin, Laura Marie Gilmore, Susan Heilich, Amy Herzog, Jennifer Jebo, Kass Kastning, Ernst H. Kastning III, Michelle Marie Lehr and Matthew Edward Long.
