WRESTLER PUTS ON GOOD BOXING SHOW IN GA. STATE GAMES

Josh Feldman used his smashing right hand to level the competition at the Georgia State Games over the weekend in Atlanta.

Feldman, a two-time Colonial Athletic Association heavyweight wrestling champion from Virginia Tech, won the super-heavyweight (more than 201 pounds) boxing title by stopping both of his opponents in the first round.

The Tech senior fought in the novice division, which is for fighters with 10 fights or fewer.

Feldman weighed in at 257 pounds.

On Saturday, he knocked out his first opponent, Dale Jackson, near the end of the first round.

Jackson came out quick, trying to take Feldman by surprise.

"He came out and was really throwing heavy stuff at Josh," said Maynard Quesenberry, Feldman's coach.

Feldman responded by connecting with a clubbing right, which sent Jackson down for an eight-count.

Another right knocked Jackson down again and the referee stopped the contest.

"He was just walking straight into me," Feldman said over the telephone from his home in Dunwoody, Ga.

"I ducked underneath him and threw the right."

The win earned Feldman a spot in Sunday's championship bout against Bob Cook.

Feldman landed several body punches to start the bout. Feldman hurt Cook with a right hand near the one-minute mark of the first round and the referee gave Cook a standing eight-count. The punch also opened a cut over Cook's eye.

All of the fighters wore protective headgear during their bouts.

After Feldman landed several more punches, the doctor examined Cook's cut and stopped the fight.

Quesenberry said he was pleased with Feldman's performance.

"He's still a beginner, but he's coming along," he said.

Feldman, now 2-0 as an amateur with two knockouts, most likely will fight again in October.

"That'll give me long enough time to develop some better skills," he said.

"I really have to work on my left hand, but my right did all right."
