Venezuela's Alejandra Vento plays Kathrin Guenther, Jill Brenner plays Japan's Yoshiko Sasano, Kelly Pace faces Vera Vitels of Russia and Jennifer Callen meets Liezel Horn of South Africa in matches that will decide main draw berths. The matches begin at 9 a.m. at Hunting Hills.
After those qualifying finals, first-round main draw matches begin.
\ Virginia Tech basketball player Jenny Root, playing for the East team, scored six points and had eight rebounds as the East fell to the South 85-63 Monday at the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival in San Antonio, Texas. The East (2-1) plays the South (3-0) again Wednesday for the gold medal.
\ The Roanoke Stars have qualified for the 1993 Amateur Athletic Union 13-under girls' national basketball championship, which will be held in Knoxville, Tenn., starting Saturday. The AAU tournament is part of the 1993 AAU Junior Olympic Games and will feature 78 teams that qualified through AAU Association Championship games.
\ The Cave Spring American Little League All-Stars were eliminated from the 13-year-old division of the state tournament by Huguenot 10-4 Monday in Woodbridge. Patrick Connelly had a single and a double, and Jeremy Hedrick's double was the team's only other hit.
\ Brett Newman pitched a complete-game 5-hitter as North Roanoke American advanced to the finals of the Dixie Girls state softball tournament with a 7-6 victory over Halifax County in Bedford. Jenell Holler had a double and a single for North Roanoke American which is 4-0 and faces Botetourt American at 6 tonight at McKee Field.
