\ Driver Stanley Smith, who fractured his skull during a NASCAR Winston Cup race last weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, was slightly more responsive although he is semi-conscious.

\ A bill introduced in the Ohio Senate could force the Cleveland Indians, Miami University's Redskins and high school sports teams to drop their American Indian nicknames.

Sen. Jeff Johnson, D-Cleveland, sponsored the proposal that prohibits public funds from being used at public facilities displaying or disseminating material "that is demeaning to a recognized ethnic or racial group."

Indians owner Richard Jacobs has said that the name and logo are part of the club's tradition and that it will continue to use both.
