Ai Sugiyama begins defense of her $10,000 USTA Women's Circuit of Roanoke singles championship today at Hunting Hills Country Club against qualifier Liezel Horn of South Africa.

Sugiyama's match begins on Court 2 after the end of the match between Anne Miller and Justine Hodder, scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Seven main-draw matches will be held today, as well as five qualifying doubles matches.

One seeded player was eliminated Tuesday, the first day of the 32-player main draw. Unseeded Mareze Joubert of South Africa beat eighth-seeded Madoka Kuki of Japan 6-2, 7-5. Six of the eight seeded players begin main-draw play today.

Tuesday morning, Horn, Russia's Vera Vitels, Japan's Yoshiko Sasano and Karin Guenther of the United States won qualifying finals matches to earn a slot in the main draw. Alejandro Vento, because she was the highest-ranked qualifying loser, was given a fifth qualifying spot in the main draw.
