OBIT PIERCE, NANNIE KATE HUGHES

PIERCE, Nannie Kate Hughes, 101, of Chilhowie, died Monday, July 26, 1993, in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. She was the widow of M. L. Pierce. She was a graduate of Farmville Female Normal School, now Longwood College, Farmville. She was the oldest member of the Riverside Baptist Church. She was a retired teacher, teaching in the public schools at Marion, Riverside & Chilhowie, for 47 years, most of which was the first grade, where she started each day with a story time for young children, which she continued in later years by visiting the schools. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Mabe, Chilhowie; one sister, Sue Blair, Wytheville; one granddaughter, Lieu Via Gary, Concord, N.C.; one grandson, Sam Mabe, Lima, N.Y.; five great-grandsons, Michael Gary, Dallas, N.C., Nathan Gary, Kannapolis, N.C., Seth Mabe, Paul Mabe, Kyle Mabe, all of Lima, N.Y.; two great-great-grandsons, Taylor Hughes Gary, Dallas, N.C., Matthew Alexander Gary, Kannapolis, N.C.; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Riverside Baptist Church with Rev. Michael R. Andrews and Rev. Fred Harcum officiating. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Riverside Baptist Church. The family will receive friends form 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Williams Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church one hour before services.
