POETRY CONTEST DEADLINE AUG. 6

Roses are red.

Violets are blue.

Here's a POETRY CONTEST,

Just for you:

The deadline is Aug. 6 for the 15th annual New River Community College poetry contest for senior citizens. You must be 60 or older to enter.

Poems should not be over 60 lines long, but you may submit up to three.

Ten winners will be picked from poems by residents of Montgomery, Pulaski, Floyd and Giles counties and the City of Radford. One poetry winner will be selected from outside those areas. Winners get a plaque and a booklet of the poems submitted for the contest. An awards reception will be held in late September.

Seniors who have a way with words should submit their original, unpublished works to: Poetry, Office of Continuing Education, New River Community College, Box 1127, Dublin, Va. 24084.

It's not too early to think about the 1993 LEGACY QUILT SHOW September:

The registration deadline is less than a month away. Forms are available at the Christiansburg Senior Center, but do not have to be a senior to participate in the show.

This show is restricted to quilts, quilted items, quilting supplies or merchandise related to quilting. There's a category for antique quilts. A set of show rules is attached to the registration form.

Completed forms should be returned by Aug. 27 to the Christiansburg Senior Center (P.O. Box 599, Christiansburg, Va. 24073) or to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, Va. 24073).

The show will be Sept. 11, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., at the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets. Call 382-8173 or 382-5775.

Applications for the 15th annual ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR in October will be available Monday at the Christiansburg Senior Center. Participants must be 55 or older, and items displayed and sold must be handmade. Tables are $10, and there's a two-table limit.

The fair will be Oct. 2, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets. Call Sherry Kostric, 382-8173.

\ The RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM looking for a few good seniors:

Anyone 60 or older who wants to do volunteer work, meet new people and have fun is eligible. Seniors interested in joining the Retired Senior Volunteer Program are welcome to attend a picnic luncheon Aug. 10 at noon at the Montgomery County Park, off U.S. 460 (right across from the Corning plant). The hamburgers are free, but those attending should bring along a picnic-type side dish.

The program has plenty of volunteer work, including visiting local nursing homes, working in the schools, helping with mailings and pitching in at the SHARE warehouse. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program often can provide transportation for volunteers who do not drive.

If you plan to attend the picnic, or need more information, call Victoria Scott at 382-5775.

RSVP and the Christiansburg Senior Center will jointly sponsor an end-of-summer, covered-dish picnic for area seniors Aug. 27, 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the No. 1 shelter at Bisset Park in Radford. Dessert and drinks will be furnished. Transportation is available. Call 382-5775 or 382-8173.
