HENRY STREET REVIVAL BUILDING TO BE RAZED

One of the vacant buildings in the Henry Street revival area in Northwest Roanoke will be demolished today because city building inspectors have found it is unstable and might collapse.

The building at Wells Avenue and First Street will be razed to remove a safety hazard for motorists and pedestrians.

City officials said motorists may want to avoid the area while the buildings is being razed.

Michelle Bono, city public information officer, said the structure was found to be unsafe when inspectors recently checked all buildings in the area.

Bono said the building was leaning forward. The inspections were prompted by the recent collapse of a nearby vacant building.

City officials conferred with former Mayor Noel Taylor and the Henry Street Revival Committee and got their approval for tearing down the building. They also talked with Gainsboro neighborhood leaders.
