BOLLING EARNS SEMIFINAL BERTH AT STATE AM

Salem's Dot Bolling was the only survivor Wednesday among the Southwest Virginia contingent in the 65th State Women's Amateur and the 36th Women's State Senior Amateur golf tournaments at Hot Springs.

Continuing her strongest State Am showing ever, Bolling eliminated Blacksburg's Juanita Petrone 4 and 3 at the Cascades Course to advance to today's semifinals.

Bolling held a 4-up lead through nine holes, but Petrone sliced her deficit to two holes when she parred the 11th and 13th. Bolling then won the 14th with a par-4 and 15th with a par-3 to clinch the victory.

Bolling will face Richmond's Maggie Balch in the semifinals. Balch advanced by upsetting defending champion Jane Mack of Richmond, 1-up in 19 holes.

Qualifying medalist Fran Hensley of Ridgeway was eliminated 3 and 1 by 1983 champion Anne Patrick of Richmond. Patrick will face Manassas' Sherry Zaleski, a 3-and-1 winner over Natalie Easterly on Wednesday, in today's other semifinal.

In the Senior Am, being played at The Homestead, Roanoke's Audrey Najjum saw her run for a fourth championship stopped by Charlottesville's Robbye King Youel, 5 and 4. Youel, a seven-time State Am titlist, is playing in the Senior division for the first time.

Youel will meet Virginia Beach's Chris Epperly, a 5-and-4 winner over Suffolk's Mary Helen Rawls, in today's semis. The other semifinal will pit two-time defending champion Kay Schiefelbein against fellow Alexandria resident Ruth Ann Verell. Schiefelbein advanced with a 4-and-2 win over Marie Winks of Forest, while Verell eliminated Joan Darden of Richmond, 6 and 4.

In other golf:

Veteran Arman Fletcher will begin his quest to become the first player ever to win the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame Seniors titles three years in a row when the tournament starts today at Botetourt Country Club.

Ned Baber, who finished third in his Hall of Fame Seniors debut last year, poses as Fletcher's top threat. Other possible contenders include two-time champion J.D. Sisson, last year's runner-up Arnold John, Paul Housman, Rufus Spiers and Winston Carter.

Defending champion Roanoke Country Club and Blue Hills are expected to battle for the team title.

The juniors field is paced by defending champion Ryan Ketron, who captured the 16-18 title in the Smith Mountain Lake Junior Open earlier this week. Chris Adcock, who teamed with Ketron on William Byrd's Group AA state title team last year, and Brian Hill, winner of the Commonwealth Games of Virginia overall title earlier this month, are Ketron's top threats.

In juniors team play, Botetourt will be shooting for a record fourth title in a row.

The final round of the 36-hole tournament will be played Friday at Hunting Hills.

Floyd's Timmy Bower and Troutville's Scott Griffin combined to fire a two-man best-ball of 6-under-par 66 Wednesday to help the Virginia team take a commanding lead in the annual Virginia-West Virginia Junior team matches at Glade Springs Resort in Beckley, W.Va. The Virginia team, going after its third straight win in the series, will take a seven-shot lead into today's individual stroke play.

Tom McKnight of Galax, who needs a win to have any shot at landing one of the final berths on the United States' Walker Cup team, shot a 1-over-par 71 Wednesday and is four shots back after the first round of the Porter Cup in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Ted Purdy of Scottsdale, Ariz., is the leader at 67.

Roanoke's Lee Shirley shot opening rounds of 77 and 78 and is nine shots off the lead at the Betsy Rawls Girls National Championship at Wilmington, Delaware. Grace Park of Phoenix leads the tournament at the Hercules Country Club Course with a 2-over-par 146.
