ETC. VIRGINIA SWIMMER 1ST AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Virginia swimmer Peter Wright won the national championship in the 800-meter freestyle event at the Phillips 66 National Championships on Wednesday in Austin, Texas. Wright's time of 7 minutes, 58.9 seconds is the second fastest time in the world, behind Kieran Perkins, an Olympic gold medalist.

Mark Levan scored two goals as the Roanoke Star under-15 White team beat Hamburg, Germany 3-0 Wednesday in the Dana Cup youth soccer tournament in Hjorring, Denmark.

Roanoke is 5-1-1 on its European trip and 3-0 in the Dana Cup. Roanoke won its division in pool play and has advanced to the 32-team winners' bracket. There are 64 teams in the under-15 age group.

Donnie Smith and Steve Kunkle also scored for Roanoke. Michael Creasey recorded his third shutout of the Dana Cup and fifth during the trip.
