"I think it's long past due that we take a healthy look at it," said Councilman Roy D'Ardenne.
D'Ardenne made his suggestion at a meeting of council's Personnel Committee. It would take an ordinance to make such a regulation effective, he said, but it could be initiated by the Personnel Committee as well as the Ordinance Committee.
Some parts of the municipal building already are smoke-free. Assistant Town Manager Rob Lyons said the policy has been to let town employees designate whether their own work areas should be smoke-free.
In another matter, Councilman Don Crispin, another Personnel Committee member, said he wants to see council find a way to recognize outstanding students from the town, as well as their teachers.
Crispin made a similar recommendation several years ago, but other town officials were concerned about discriminating against students from Pulaski County with such recognition.
"As we move into the next century, if we do not encourage our students to excel academically, we are going to have an awful lot of competition out there in the world," Crispin said.
