ROANOKE SOCCER TEAM WINS IN DENMARK

Michael Creasey recorded his fourth straight shutout Thursday as the Roanoke Star 15-under White team beat Stockholm, Sweden, 1-0 to reach the final 16 of the Dana Cup youth soccer tournament in Hjorring, Denmark.

Star coach Danny Beamer said his team is the only remaining U.S. team in any age group still playing in the "premier" division - or winner's bracket - of the 680-team, single-elimination tournament. Beamer said he believes no Virginia team ever has reached the round of 16 at the Dana Cup.

Beamer said Stockholm outshot Roanoke 6-2 and bruised the Star with a physical game, but Roanoke advanced anyway. Brian Sharp scored on William Watkins' assist, and Tait Duus' defense aided Creasey.

"The whole atmosphere has taken them to the next step," Beamer said. "They just want to win so bad. They all say, `Why can't we do this in the States? Why can't we win more in the States?' They're at another level."

Roanoke plays again today against another Swedish team for the right to advance to the quarterfinals.

Roanoke is 4-0 in the Dana Cup and 6-1-1 on its European trip. All of its victories have been by shutout.
