ASSATEAGUE PONIES AUCTIONED FOR $58,800

Volunteer firefighters in this island town off the Eastern Shore sold 87 wild ponies for $58,800, nearly twice the amount they had hoped to raise from Thursday's auction.

Jim Russell, president of the Fire Department, said the ponies sold for an average of $675.86, about $250 higher than last year's average.

A chestnut-colored male with a white blaze on his face and four white stockings brought $1,600, the highest price in this year's auction, which lasted just under four hours.
