OBIT BROWN, J. GORDON
BROWN, J. Gordon, 65, of Lakeland, Fla., died Wednesday, July 28, 1993, at
Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Born in Terre Haute, Ind., on August 25,
1927, he came to Lakeland from Blacksburg, Va., six years ago. He was the dean
of students at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg until retiring in 1987. He was a
former dean of men and assistant football coach at Emory and Henry College,
Emory, Va., and a former principal of Bassell Elementary School and
Springbrook Elementary School. He was a veteran of the Naval Reserves. He was
president of the Blacksburg Community Federation, the Board of Directors for
the Blacksburg United Fund and the Advisory Committee for Cable TV to the
Blacksburg Town Council. He was a member and past president and past vice
president of the Alumni Board of Directors at Eastern Tennessee State
University and was past president of the Rotary Club in Alcoa, Tenn. He was a
member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators
Committee on Professional Relations and Financial Aids, the Virginia
Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Delta Epsilon,
Omicrom Delta Kappa, Lambda Chi Alpha and the Lakeland South Rotary Club., He
was a member and usher of the Lakeland First United Methodist Church. He is
survived by his wife, Patsy Ralston Brown, Lakeland; son, Michael Gordon
Brown, Virginia Beach; daughters, Sheridan Lynn Matthiesen, Lexington, Mass.
and Karen Sue DeBord, Columbia, Mo.; stepson, William Myers, Cincinnati;
stepdaughter, Julie Grender, Cincinnati; brother, Gerald Brown, Orlando; nine
grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, First United Methodist Church,
Lakeland. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Lakeland South
Rotary, 209 S. Iowa, Lakeland, Fla. 33801.
