SCREEN DEBUT

Roanoke's only independent movie house is premiering its new movie screen tonight.

"Like Water for Chocolate" and "Indochine" will be the first films to show in the Grandin's new Screening Room II.

"We'd gotten to the point where we couldn't handle the number of people we were getting," Grandin owner Julie Hunsaker said. "We were selling out all the time."

The new 41-seat theater was constructed in the space next to the ticket booth, which was formerly RoJo's and, before that, Jimmy's BBQ. A new handicapped-accessible restroom has been installed as well.

Hunsaker says the addition will mean five movies can show at once at the Grandin, and possibly more art films.

And perhaps the best news of all: Because the floor levels of the new theater will graduate up, the Grandin's second screening room will afford more leg room than the first.

The new digs are reported to be more luxurious, too. The color scheme is black, tan and teal. The seats, 11 more than in the first screening room, are covered with tapestry.
