BENEFIT TOURNAMENT PLANNED AT HANGING ROCK

More than 500 golfers from Southwestern Virginia are expected to compete in the 10th annual Juvenile Diabetes-Cox Cable Charity golf tournament Aug. 9-10 at Hanging Rock.

The two-day, four-round captain's choice tournament has netted more than $300,000 for diabetes research in the past nine years.

Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 8, when all contestants and one guest each are invited to a charity cocktail party at the Sheraton Inn-Airport.

There will shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day of the tournament. Entry fee is $250 per team. To enter, call the JDF office at 989-6627 or tournament official Don Stanley at 345-2988 or 345-3647.

Galax's Tom McKnight soared to an 8-over-par 78 Friday and fell out of contention in the Porter Cup amateur tournament in Niagara Falls, N.Y. McKnight's total of 12-over 222 put him 16 shots off the lead heading into today's final round of the 72-hole tournament.
