VELOSO WINS WILLIAMSBURG TOURNAMENT

Antonette Veloso of Vinton won the singles championship at the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit tournament in Williamsburg.

Veloso beat Allegra Milholland of William and Mary 6-1, 6-3 for her fourth victory in the tournament. Veloso, a William Byrd High School graduate who plays at Rice University, played in four ITA summer events, winning in Greensboro, N.C., reaching the semifinals in Blacksburg and reaching the quarterfinals in Richmond.

Veloso won two matches Thursday, including her semifinal over Notre Dame's Holyn Lord 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.

\ Swimming in the Age Group championships at Riverside Wellness Center in Richmond, Laura Webb of the Roanoke Valley Gators won the 200-meter individual medley in 2 minutes, 46.88 seconds, and she set a record of 1:29.78 for 10-and-under girls in the 100 breast stroke. Webb also finished third in the 50 freestyle.

In 10-and-under boys competition, Brett Fonder was fourth in the 200 individual medley, and Tyler Gustafson was fifth. Fonder was second in the 50 freestyle.

Emily Mullett finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke for 11-12 girls. Emily Whichard was third in the 50 freestyle and won the 400 freestyle in 4:46.72, with Jamie Spradlin fifth. Adam Gustafson was sixth for 11-12 boys in the 50 freestyle.
