BOOKSTORE OFFERS CLASSES ON WRITING

Fiction and memoir-writing classes will be offered at Blue Ridge Books starting during the last week in August.

The course will run for seven weeks for a total of 14 hours, with students being able to choose between Sunday afternoon or Monday night classes. The first classes will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 29 and 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 30.

The classes will be taught by Liza Field of Wytheville, who has taught creative writing and English literature at the University of Michigan, Virginia Western Community College and Southwestern College in Kansas. A recipient of the PEN Syndicated Fiction Award, she has published work in 10 journals and anthologies and broadcasts on both PBS and BBC radio.

Students from the New River Valley and Southwest Virginia who have completed previous courses taught by Field at the book store continue to meet there every other week to encourage one another to keep writing and critique their manuscripts.

Tuition for the new classes is $65 before Aug. 20 and $70 after that ($50 for senior citizens and high school students). Preregistration is advised to make sure of a place in one of the classes. People can register or get further information by calling Blue Ridge Books (228-8303).
