UNION TO PICKET GOODY'S ROANOKE OPENINGS

A labor union that routinely pickets Goody's Family Clothing stores during peak sales periods is expected to call today for a boycott at the retailer's two stores opening this week in Roanoke.

Harold Bock, Mid-Atlantic regional organizing director of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union, said it will report on the company's situation, executive compensation, regulatory concerns and other matters. The labor group scheduled a morning news conference in Roanoke to detail its local action against the company.

Goody's will open stores Thursday at Tanglewood and Crossroads malls.

Jonathan Davis, spokesman for the union in Washington, said it will conduct informational picketing at the openings urging customers not to patronize the stores.

The union said workers at Goody's Knoxville distribution center voted for representation in 1992. It accused the company of an attempt to "delay and frustrate" bargaining for a contract.

In a story in Sunday's Roanoke Times & World-News, Goody's president Roger Jenkins defended the company.

"We clearly are unhappy and feel badly that the union has taken to tactics like boycottting, picketing and distributing signs that inaccurately depict the situation," Jenkins said. "We are negotiating in good faith with the union toward a contract. We feel very good about the success we are having in that endeavor."
