OFFICIALS SAY SETTLEMENT MADE IN FOOD LION CASE

The Labor Department and Food Lion Inc., have reached a multimillion-dollar settlement over alleged violations of federal overtime and child labor laws by the supermarket chain, government officials said Monday.

Labor Department sources, who asked not to be identified further, said the case amounted to a "record-breaking" wage-and-hour settlement involving a private employer. Further details could not be learned.

Labor Secretary Robert Reich planned to make the announcement at a news conference today.
