DOING DRUGS IS A MATTER OF CHOICE

I WAS VERY disturbed by the July 28 commentary Drugs are a government effort to commit genocide. It seems that Mr. Davis has chosen to overlook the fact that individuals have a responsibility for their actions. It is a thwarted view of society to believe that the government has a responsibility to protect the American public from the temptation of drugs. Each individual must make the choice for themselves whether they choose to engage in such illegal activities.

I was also troubled by Mr. Davis's overwhelming stereotyping. It is unfortunate that there are financial gaps in society; however, I commend those of all races who have overcome their financial handicap and used their talents to benefit their community. As a white American, I resent the fact that he accuses me of trying to destroy anyone, much less on the basis of their skin color. Drugs are a serious problem and on that must be dealth with. I cannot blame the government for the tragic effects cocaine and other drugs have on individuals and society, however. I know that each American citizen, whatever race, has the power to choose their own lifestyle--that is what makes the United States the great nation it is. GINA NASCA ROANOKE
