ROCK REINING IN REGION'S COUNTRY MUSIC

Country music is leading the Roanoke-Lynchburg radio market, but rock and Top 40 are making gains.

Country-music WYYD (107.9 FM) has the largest audience share, according to Arbitron's newly released spring 1993 ratings survey of the area. A station's audience share is a percentage of all radio listeners tuned into a particular station for any particular time.

WYYD rebounded from a slight dip in the fall to post its best audience share ever. From its beginning about 10 years ago, WYYD ``has grown slowly but steadily'' to build a loyal audience, said program director Kenny Shelton. ``People have accepted us more'' in recent years.

On the other side of the market, K92 had lost some listeners but seems to have gained some back. WXLK (92.3 FM) in Roanoke and WLYK (100.1 FM) in Lynchburg slid into third place up one from fourth place in the fall.

Naturally, Ashby Coleman, K92's operations manager, is pleased and said he plans to move higher.
