Toyota's withdrawal further clouds the future of IMSA. Toyota was the only factory-backed team in the sanctioning body's featured GTP division. Nissan, Mazda and Jaguar left IMSA before the 1993 season citing skyrocketing costs.
Mark Raffauf, IMSA's director of competition, said Toyota's decision was not unexpected.
"IndyCar racing is a logical place for them to go," Raffauf said. "They've won everything there is to win in IMSA."
Toyota has dominated IMSA racing the past two years. In 1992, Toyota drivers Juan Manuel Fangio and P.J. Jones won nine of 13 races on the IMSA circuit. This season, Fangio and Jones have won seven of eight races, including the Grand Prix of Miami in February. Fangio won the race while Jones finished second.
