According to the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department, the 16-year-old defendant was originally a passenger in a car that Christiansburg police were attempting to halt.
Answering a request for assistance at around 9 p.m., Pulaski County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Lyons stopped the vehicle on Virginia 100 and arrested the driver, Dreama Dawn Taylor, 19, of Christiansburg.
After Lyons removed Taylor from the car, the 16-year-old grabbed a can of mace, sprayed the deputy and drove away.
Lyons had to release his grip on the defendant to avoid being dragged away by the vehicle. He was not seriously injured and recovered rapidly enough to return to his cruiser and pursue the car.
Sheriff's deputies and officers from the state police and town of Pulaski pursued the car for some time before it was halted on Peppers Ferry Road.
During the chase, the defendant rammed two police cars.
He was being held at the juvenile detention center in Christiansburg.
Taylor has been charged with eluding police and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
