Indeed, Vinton Del. Dick Cranwell, majority leader in the House of Delegates, got the 1993 General Assembly to pass a bill - it became law last month - adding duck races to the list of games of chance that fund-raising organizations can operate for fun and nonprofits' profit.
Mind you, these don't involve real ducks trained, like greyhounds, to chase after a cracker crumb on a string.
No, these games involve inanimate toy ducks.
The quackless quackers are released into a body of moving water. The person who's bet on the first duck to cross a watery finish line is the winner. Exciting, huh?
Seems duck races have been popular fund-raisers among charities in some localities, but there were differences of opinion as to their legality.
We think it was just ducky of Dickie to get it clarified.
But are there no limits to which the General Assembly won't go to boost gambling? We wouldn't bet on it, either way.
