ROADWATCH

Highway and street projects scheduled this week by area localities and the Virginia Department of Transportation:\ \ ROANOKE

Fifth Street bridge construction - A new four-lane bridge is being built between Salem and Gilmer avenues over Norfolk Southern tracks. Beginning Aug. 16, the existing bridge will be closed for about eight months.

The Elm Avenue (Virginia 24) bridge over I-581 - Repairs under way at night and from 7 p.m. Fridays through 7 a.m. Mondays. During the work, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction. The job is estimated to last another month.\ \ ROANOKE COUNTY

Interstate 81 paving - From I-581 to the Botetourt County line, the northbound lanes of I-81 are receiving new asphalt overlays to maintain the riding surface. Traffic is restricted to one lane. Work is being performed at night and should be completed in about a week.

U.S. 11/460 bridge - At the Montgomery County line, the bridge over the Roanoke River and Norfolk Southern railroad will be under repair starting Monday. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the westbound lane while repairs are being performed on the eastbound side. Speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph. Vehicles wider than 9 feet are prohibited. Work to replace the bridge's deck will last until next spring.\ \ BEDFORD

Virginia 122 reconstruction - About 0.4 mile of Virginia 122 is being rebuilt, from 0.5 mile north of the intersection of Orange Street to Longwood Avenue. The new road will be paved with asphalt concrete, and the project includes new traffic signals. Work will continue through the end of the year.
