ROANOKE TEAM WINS TENNIS TITLE

The Hot Shots of Roanoke won the USTA women's 4.0 state championship in Richmond on Sunday.

The Hot Shots beat Tidewater 5-0 in the final after earlier victories over Richmond Weekend (5-0) and Northern Virginia No. 2 (4-1).

Page Griffin and Lynn Snead won singles matches, and the doubles winners were Donna Mills and Winnie Barham, Sue Colbourne and Randy Finigan, and Kathy O'Keffe and Eva Guertler.

The Hot Shots advance to Wintergreen for sectionals on Aug. 20.

In other tennis:

Salem's Tommy McDonald, a rising senior at East Carolina University, teamed with John Santoro of Georgetown to win the doubles championship at the Georgetown University Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit tournament in Washington, D.C. McDonald and Santoro defeated Georgetown's Steve Fishback and Terry Adamson 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

In the semifinals of the singles tournament, McDonald lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to Roberto Castillo of Freed-Hardeman College. McDonald defeated Lee Shackleford of Virginia Tech and Robert Clarkson of Georgetown to reach the semifinals.
