PARTRIDGE'S 143 WINS FOX-PUSS INVITATIONAL

David Partridge of Richmond shot a final-round 73 and won the Fox-Puss Invitational golf tournament Sunday at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg.

Partridge, the 1993 State Amateur champion who started the day in third place after an opening-round 70, finished the rain-shortened tournament with a 1-under-par total of 143 for a one-stroke victory over first-round co-leaders Allen Barber of Newport News and Greg Bales of Richmond.

Barber and Bales each shot a first-round 68 and a second-round 76 for a 144 total.

David Brogan of Lexington finished fourth at 71-75-146, tied with Pulaski native Chuck Pickle 74-72-146.

Other Southwestern Virginians' scores:

J.W. Entsminger, Lexington, 71-76-147; Chris Clemens, Roanoke, 73-76-149; Bill Sibbick, Martinsville, 75-74-149; Jack Tuttle, Roanoke, 74-80-154; Barry Graham, Roanoke, 77-78-155.

Craig Gunn of Danville ran away with the pro division of the Valley Shrine Golf Classic, shooting a final-round 67 for a five-stroke victory.

Gunn opened with a 68 in the PGA Mid-Atlantic event played at Spotswood Country Club in Harrisonburg and the Country Club of Staunton.

Jay Reid of Hunting Hills and Chip Sullivan of Hanging Rock shared second at 140 with Joe Greenwalt of Ruggles Golf Club and Del Snyder of Golden Horseshoe. All opened with 68s and closed with 72s.

Jay Hardwick, the Virginia Tech golf coach, finished at 73-72-145.

The low amateur team for the tournament was the Country Club of Staunton. Its members - Tourney McIntyre, Lee Clark, Carmen Davis and John Lupton - shot rounds of 61 and 59 for a 120 total.
