ANDREWS COMES CLOSE AGAIN IN LPGA EVENT

Dana Lofland-Dormann's thoughts turned to perfection as she stood 100 yards from the 18th hole, the pressure mounting as she sought her second LPGA victory.

"One hundred yards is perfect yardage for me," she said, because it allowed her to use her favorite club, a pitching wedge.

She hit a perfect shot within two feet of the cup and then rolled in the putt for a one-stroke victory over Donna Andrews on Sunday in the McCall's LPGA Classic.

Lofland-Dormann, who had a one-stroke lead over Andrews after the third round, shot a 69 and finished with a 13-under-par 275 to win $75,000. She led after all four rounds of the tournament.

Andrews, of Lynchburg, Va., closed with a 69 for a 276 total as the two battled in a confrontation that left other challengers behind.

Deb Richard, who began the day six strokes behind, finished third at 279 after shooting a 67, matching the best round of the day.

Lofland-Dormann and Andrews never were separated by more than two strokes.

Andrews had seven birdies and four bogeys, and Lofland-Dormann countered with five birdies and two bogeys.

"We knew what was going on," Lofland-Dormann said. "A couple of times we were a little shaky, but it really was a great battle down to the end."

Andrews tied Lofland-Dormann three times before the decisive 12th hole. Tied at 11-under, Lofland-Dormann hit a pitching wedge within 18 inches and sank the putt.

Andrews hit her drive into a trap and wound up missing a 20-footer for a bogey to lose two strokes. She never caught up again, but she kept the pressure on.

Andrews hit a fairway trap on the final hole while Lofland-Dormann hit the rough just above the trap. After each pitched onto the fairway on the par-5 hole, Andrews hit an iron within 15 feet, giving her a chance to tie.

Andrews applied the final pressure by sinking her putt, but Lofland-Dormann confidently knocked hers down to break the tournament record by three strokes.

Andrews, without a victory in four years on the tour, has three finishes in the top seven the past four weeks. She won $46,546 to send her earnings over $210,000.
