NORTH ROANOKE FALLS IN SOFTBALL WORLD SERIES

The North Roanoke American Ponytails were hammered 10-2 by Alabama in the Dixie Girls Softball World Series for 10- to 12-year-olds in Zephyrhills, Fla.

It was close only in the first inning, when Holly Booth got the team's only hit - a single - and later stole home. The other run came in on a groundout. Alabama broke it open in the second inning with five runs on five hits and two errors.

North Roanoke plays today at 6 p.m. against Texas in the losers' bracket.

In Callaway, Pure Stock points leader R.W. Lawhorn withstood a last-lap charge from Leon Moles to record a victory in a late race at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday night.

Moles spun out battling for the lead and finished eighth. Kenny McKinney and Mike Owens placed second and third, respectively.

In the late Rookie class race, Gary Clifton won for the first time this season. Points leader Steve Hurley edged Jimmy Wilson for second in a photo-finish.

Dean Sutphin was the first car to cross the finish line in the Any Car race, but his vehicle did not pass inspection. Ernest Hylton was awarded the win.

Track inspector Glenn Reed also disqualified Late Model driver Carl Dadian and Street Stock driver Lonnie Foley. Each had finished second in his respective division.
