GOLFERS CLAIM SPOTS FOR U.S. AMATEUR

Mike Smith of Roanoke and 1993 Eastern Amateur golf champion Tom McKnight of Galax claimed two of the four available spots in qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday at the Country Club of Petersburg.

Smith shot a 36-hole total of 2-over-par 146 (71-75), while McKnight shot 147 (75-72) on the 7,034-yard layout.

Will Power of Richmond shot a pair of 72s to win the qualifying medal. Danville's Jimmy Flippen, who will be a junior in the fall at the University of Virginia, was second at 145 (69-76).

The 93rd U.S. Amateur will be played Aug. 24-29 in Houston.
