WHERE TO LEARN MORE

Dr. Tom Squier, author of the book "Living Off the Land Wild Food Cookbook" will give two lectures at the Plant Plant, located off U.S. 11 between Christiansburg and Radford, at the nursery's upcoming herb festival.

Squier, who is grandson of a Cherokee medicine man, will talk about American Indian herbs in cooking August 28 and will speak the next day on herbs of the Bible. At the same event, Katherine Chantal will present a program called "Herbal Medicine Chest." Call 382-2653 for times.

The Science Museum of Southwest Virginia sometimes conducts spring and fall mushroom treks, but their guide, a former Virginia Tech professor, has not been available this year. They are hoping to schedule trips as soon as their expert is again available. Call 342-5710.

You'll have to wait for spring if you plan to forage with Virginia Museum of Natural History, Virginia Tech branch. They sponsor spring walks in search of morels. A call to 231-2001 will put you through to their Main Street location.

Blue Ridge Parkway evening programs at Rocky Knob sometimes feature lectures on medicinal uses of area plants by ranger and interpreter Heather Connaly. Call 982-6458 or 745-3429.
