IN SERVICE

RAY M. COMPTON and ERIK T. GORDON, both of Blacksburg, were among the 24 graduates in Class XXXV of the Virginia National Guard Officer Candidate School.

The graduation marked the completion of 14 months of training that included a pair of two-week sessions and more than a dozen weekend assemblies.

After meeting administrative requirements, Compton and Gordon are eligible for commissions as second lieutenants. They will serve in the Virginia Army National Guard.

The graduation ceremonies were held July 24 at Caroline County High School in Bowling Green.

Those who recently received awards include:

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class BRIAN K. SOWERS, son of Walter L. and Sharon Sowers of Christiansburg, was awarded the Silver Dolphin insignia while assigned aboard the submarine USS Narwhal, homeported in Charleston, S.C.

The insignia is awarded to enlisted members of the submarine service who have met a series of qualifications, including passing an oral examination by other qualified submariners.

Those who recently participated in exercises include:

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class GENE D. SHANNON, a 1977 graduate of Shawsville High School, took part in Fleet Exercise 3-93 in the western Atlantic Ocean aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeported in Norfolk.

Those who recently were deployed include:

Navy Airman MICHAEL H. NEVERGOLD, son of Michael W. Nevergold of Pearisburg, is deployed with Strike Fighter Squadron 15, Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Fla., as part of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt Battle Group. The battle group has helped impose "no-fly" zones over southern Iraq and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Navy Seaman Recruit DAVID S. LONG, son of Mary C. and Bobby J. Long Sr. of Blacksburg, has completed the first half of a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean aboard the amphibious cargo ship USS El Paso, part of the USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group, homeported in Norfolk.

Those who recently reported for duty include:

Navy Lt. FREDRICK S. HALL, son of F. Spencer and Kathy L. Hall of Radford, reported for duty with 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Those who recently completed special training include:

Air Force 2nd Lt. DONALD W. EDWARDS JR., son of Donald W. Edwards of Christiansburg, graduated from the officer rotary wing aviator course at Fort Rucker, Daleville, Ala., and has received the silver wings of an Air Force Aviator.

Those who recently completed basic training include:

Marine 2nd Lt. BRYAN P. FRAZIER, son of Jerry K. and Anna L. Frazier of Narrows, graduated from The Basic School at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Quantico, Va.

Marine Pfc. KEVIN W. BUTLER, son of Jenny W. Butler of Radford, completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was promoted to his current rank.

Marine Pfc. CHARLES J. MEADE, son of Barbara E. Morrow and stepson of Harvey D. Morrow of Shawsville, completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was promoted to his current rank.
