DIABETIC DRIVERS CAN TAKE THE ROAD AGAIN

Diabetics who have been barred from driving trucks or buses across state lines will be allowed to operate the vehicles if they meet stringent conditions, the Transportation Department said Wednesday.

The Federal Highway Administration said insulin-using diabetics who qualify will be given waivers to drive the vehicles in interstate commerce for three years as the agency seeks to develop a permanent rule.

To qualify, a diabetic must have three years experience driving commercial vehicles and a good driving record, plus approval from an endocrinologist. Drivers also must keep logs on their blood glucose and submit monthly reports to the highway administration. - Associated Press
