Awards program will honor young essayists

The Alliance for Excellence of Virginia Western Community College will sponsor an awards program to recognize sixth- through eighth-graders who participated in its first "Essay on Excellence" contest.

The program will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church, 1513 Rorer Ave.

Vinton bluegrass fest scheduled Aug. 19-22

The fifth annual Vinton Old-Time Bluegrass Festival and Competition will be held Aug. 19-22.

This year's event will feature nationally known recording artists Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver on Aug. 19. Other entertainers for the festival include bands from the Roanoke Fiddle and Banjo Club, Plum Sideways, Bluegrass Ramblers, Inheritance, The Lewis Family, Valley View Boys, and Homespun.

Last year's winners The Bluegrass Brothers and Southern Aire also will perform.

If the music isn't enough to draw you to downtown Vinton, there will be daily carnival rides and a crafts alley Aug. 20-22.

Navy veteran named chaplain for hospice

William E. Baker, a 12-year veteran of the Navy Chaplain Corps, has been named the first full-time chaplain with the Good Samaritan Hospice.

Baker, former dean of students at the University of Richmond, also served in Navy hospitals in Bethesda, Md.; Newport, R.I.; and Beaufort, S.C. He served as chief aide to the families of President Reagan and Vice President Bush during the 1981 inauguration.

He also served on the staff of Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger in 1986.

Good Samaritan is a community-based health-care agency that helps terminally ill patients remain at home.

MDA needs volunteers for Labor Day telethon

Volunteers are needed to help run carnival games for the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon Sept. 6.

The activities to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association will be held in front of the Professional Park One building at the corner of Virginia 419 and Starkey Road.

Interested volunteers and donors should contact the MDA office at 772-3237.

Roanoke schedules school registration

All students who will be new enrollees in Roanoke public schools or who have moved into a new school attendance zone during the summer are asked to register at the school in their attendance zone by Aug. 27.

Parents must bring a copy of their child's birth certificate, school entrance physical, Social Security number and record of immunization.

The registration schedule for grades K-12 is: Monday through Aug. 19, Aug. 23-26 and Aug. 31, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Aug. 30, 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Students who have not registered before the first day of school will be required to register Sept. 7-10 between 3 and 5 p.m. No student will be permitted to register during school hours during this period.

Secondary students who are new to the school division or have not yet enrolled should call the guidance counselor at their schools and make an appointment to register.

School orientations will be held Sept. 2 for kindergartners, sixth- and ninth-graders.

Orientation times are: kindergarten, 10 a.m.; middle school, 7:40 to 11 a.m.; and high school, 8:25 to 11:20 a.m.

Bus transportation will be provided and routes listed in the Sept. 2 edition of Neighbors.

Dance groups win titles in Myrtle Beach

The Senior Performing Group from the Ardell Stone School of Dancing won first place in the senior small-group tap category at Dance Makers Inc. National Competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C., recently.

The Junior Performing Group won second place in the junior small tap division. The groups also won second place in the large-group lyrical category.

Members of the Senior Group are Amy Edwards, Michele Kaulback, Kelly Conklin, Molly Rutherford, Susan Lawson, Sarah Clyburn and Maggie Herchenrider. The Junior Group members are Ann Ball Lawson, Emmy Spencer, Maggie Light, Misha Paiement, Blake Points and Katie Stockburger.

VDOT needs volunteers for outreach program

The Virginia Department of Transportation needs volunteers to help bring a new outreach program to elementary schools.

Outreach sessions include: tour orientation, hobo code lessons, puppet shows and storytelling. No experience or expert knowledge is necessary. Volunteers also are needed for restoration activities, tour guides and front-desk help. Full training will be provided.

American Legion post elects new officers

American Legion Post 3 of the Roanoke Valley recently elected officers for 1993-94.

They are: Dan Karnes, post commander; Mel Linkous, first vice commander; Posey Oyler, second vice commander; Glenn Thomas, service officer; Sam Black, finance officer; Frank Holdren, judge advocate; Elmo Clemons, chaplain; George Guill, sergeant-at-arms; Bill Burroughs, assistant sergeant-at-arms; Paul Vest, historian; and Tony Hehn and Al Folden, executive committee.

Participants needed for school craft show

The PTA of Northside Junior High School is looking for artisans to participate in its annual Fall Craft Show Oct. 22-23.
