`OZONE' THERAPY LANDS DIET DOCTOR IN HOT WATER

Diet doctor Robert Atkins made millions telling people they could lose weight eating such fat-laden foods as steak, butter and eggs. Now, another unconventional approach has gotten him in trouble.

Atkins' medical license was suspended Thursday for allegedly telling a cancer patient to continue unconventional "ozone" therapy despite her complaints of dizziness, headache, blurred vision and other maladies.

Atkins, author of two best-selling diet books and advocate of an unconventional ozone gas therapy, is "an imminent danger to the health" of New Yorkers, state Health Commissioner Mark Chassin said in an order released Thursday.

Atkins made millions from his books, "The Diet Revolution" (1972) and "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" (1992). They popularized his belief that people can lose weight eating steak, butter, bacon and eggs rather than foods rich in carbohydrates.

Atkins has argued that ozone gas can kill cancer cells and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. - Associated Press
