TV FINDS VIOLENCE TOO COSTLY

Action? Hardly. The fall season will be shy on shows with gunplay. Part of the reason is economics.

"We can't afford to put 'em on," says ABC Entertainment President Ted Harbert.

A look at the networks' action-show roll calls of seasons past and this September:

20 Years Ago: "The FBI," "Mannix," "Barnaby Jones," "The Rookies," "Gunsmoke," "Hawaii Five-0," "Police Story," "Cannon," "Kojak," "Adam 12," "Chase," "Griff," "Toma," "Kung Fu," "Streets of San Francisco," "ABC Suspense Movie," "NBC Sunday Mystery Movie," "NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie."

10 Years Ago: "The A-Team," "Hardcastle & McCormick," "Scarecrow & Mrs. King," "Hart to Hart," "Remington Steele," "Manimal," "The Rousters," "Knight Rider," "Fall Guy," "Trauma Center," "Magnum, P.I.," "Simon & Simon," "Hill Street Blues," "Matt Houston," "T.J. Hooker."

Come September (including Fox): "NYPD Blue," "South of Sunset," "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.," "Bakersfield," "Law and Order," "In the Heat of the Night," "The Commish," "Walker," "Texas Ranger."
