SEMINAR TO TAKE LOOK AT WORKERS' COMP

The Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Development Council will sponsor a seminar on workers' compensation insurance premiums on Sept. 16.

The seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel, starting with a continental breakfast.

Robert Mullen of McDonough Caperton Insurance Group, which is underwriting the seminar, said a duplicate session will be held in the afternoon if there is enough demand.

Mullen said a change in state law that goes into effect Jan. 1 should result in more rapid and competitive changes in workers' compensation insurance premiums.

Under present law, he explained, the Bureau of Insurance must approve all rate changes in advance.

Starting Jan. 1, insurance carriers can file rates and put them into effect immediately, the system used for most other types of insurance. If the premiums are disapproved later, the carrier must refund the money.

Keynote speaker at the seminar will be Blake G. Anderson, field marketing manager with Kemper National Insurance Companies in Richmond. He formerly worked for the Virginia Bureau of Insurance.

Panelists will also answer questions from the audience on measures that can be taken to improve workplace safety and thus reduce the costs of premiums.

Interested small-business representatives can register by calling 983-0717. The cost is $25 for members of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and $35 for the general public.
